The City of Oakland's Cultural Heritage Survey in the early 1980s designated a five block downtown area the Historic Lakeside Apartments District. The district is currently bounded by 14th Street, Harrison Street, 17th Street, and Lakeshore Drive.

The district includes 27 buildings already defined as contributors to the district — now, in 2007, more buildings have reached the 50-year-old mark, and could be considered for inclusion.
